Abstract

This research aims to examine the experience of illness in the Book of Psalms and is articulated around the following guiding question: why does it become a constant tension between punishment and trial, pain and healing, despair and hope? To answer this question, we conducted a bibliographic review in the historical, theological, and biblical fields. The inquiry is developed in three stages. First, the work focuses on the analysis of pain in antiquity, particularly in the hebrew tradition, which provided a specific interpretation of the human condition. The second part is dedicated to the concrete study of this experience in the Psalms, for this purpose, we specifically selected five of them: 6,2-3; 31,11; 41,4-5; 88,16; 103,3-4, which detail the believer’s experience of pain. Third, we offer a theological reading of suffering, while also providing a Christological interpretation. In this way, illness transcends the biological given for the psalmist, Yahve transforms human suffering into an event of salvation.
