«I look forward to the life of the world to come»:The Function of Hope in the letter to the Romans

In several of the Pauline epistles it is possible to see the close relationship between faith, hope and charity; but What is specific to each of them? In the letter to the Romans, the function of faith and charity is explicit: man is justified by faith, without needing the works of the law; and the consequence of this is a life presented as a pleasing offering to God through the exercise of charity. As for hope, its function is not very clear. This is why, starting from the biblical data, especially from the analysis of Rm 8, 18-30, we will discover that, in the letter to the Romans, the function of hope (ἐλπίς) is to make the baptized see that they were created for a life that transcends the limits of space and present time: the life of the world to come, eternal life; this is the goal that encourages us to move forward even in the midst of sufferings that make the meaning of our existence fade. And this is only possible because God, to whom we are attached by faith, is the one who brings it about.
